Silian Tunisian Crochet Hooks

You may have seen the reviews on YouTube of the Tunisian crochet hook set that some have ordered from AliExpress. It was really Toni Lipsey’s (TLYarnCrafts.com) review that tipped me over the edge. But when I went to AliExpress to order the set she bought, it wasn’t available. That set was finished in a silvery chrome. However, the same store (QZLKnit) had a set with a golden finish. To be honest, I prefer gold anyway. They seemed to be the same hooks with all of the same pieces, so I went ahead and ordered them.

See the unboxing experience here:

I paid about $75 for the set along with shipping. Prices will vary over time; they are selling for significantly less than that at the time of publishing.

The hooks come in a lovely golden finish that shows scratches and fingerprints easily, but I have not had any scratching to the point where the finish is wearing away. I do not know how well these will wear and that is my primary concern. The hooks have labeling on them that feels like it may be etched but I worry that this labeling will fade with time.

They have some weight to them but aren’t so heavy that they are uncomfortable to use for hours at a time. I have used the 8.0- and 9.0-mm hooks to make two large shawls and my experience was positive. One shawl was in Merino Superwash wool, and the other was acrylic. The hook slid nicely with both types of yarn and I didn’t have any problems with unnecessary snagging or sticking. I also really like the cords that come in this set; they are bendable but don’t get stuck in annoying positions. The cords in the set are golden to match the hooks. They look like galvanized wire rope wrapped in a golden plastic or resin.

As these are fairly inexpensive compared to other sets, especially other metal sets, I can recommend these. My one caution is that some of the hook tips are very sharp, especially on the smaller hooks. My 6.0 mm hook is sharp enough to do bodily damage. However, the tops of the hooks aren’t as sharp and you are less likely to injure yourself on the hook tip as you are on the top of the hook, so it’s really more of an issue of whether the hooks snag yarn. For the yarn I used them with, I didn’t have any problems with snagging. For my initial test with some cheap acrylic yarn, I did experience some snagging with the 6.0 mm hook. But my experience with larger hooks was snag-free.

I like this set quite a bit and it will be my go-to set for use at home. If you try them out, let me know how they work for you.
